What are BMPs in Lake Tahoe?

bmps_lake_tahoeIn short, Best Management Practices (BMPs) in Lake Tahoe are required methods to help developed properties prevent soil erosion and to infiltrate roof and driveway runoff into the ground.  This also helps prevent sediment and nutrients from entering our surface waters.

These requirements include providing paved driveway, installing drip-line infiltration trenches, and other remedial BMP property improvements.

Sloping ground and bare soil should be covered with a mosaic of native and/or adapted plants and mulch.  Mulching and vegetating soils helps absorb rain and snow melt.

What is TRPA in Lake Tahoe?

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) in Lake Tahoe is a governmental agency that was set forth in the 1980's to establish a balance between the natural environment and the human-made environment.

trpa_lake_tahoeOver a hundred years ago, conservationists voiced concerns about the impacts of logging, ranching, and tourism on the Lake Tahoe environment.  Their idea to make Lake Tahoe a national forest didn't gain wide support in Washington D.C., primarily because there was already land that was privately owned and had been developed or logged in Lake Tahoe Basin.
