What are BMPs in Lake Tahoe?

In short, Best Management Practices (BMPs) in Lake Tahoe are required methods to help developed properties prevent soil erosion and to infiltrate roof and driveway runoff into the ground. This also helps prevent sediment and nutrients from entering our surface waters.
These requirements include providing paved driveway, installing drip-line infiltration trenches, and other remedial BMP property improvements.
Sloping ground and bare soil should be covered with a mosaic of native and/or adapted plants and mulch. Mulching and vegetating soils helps absorb rain and snow melt.
The University of Nevada Cooperatvie Extension has compiled the Home Landscaping Guide for the Tahoe Basin which is the most environmentally sensitive way to go about landscaping and completing BMPs in Lake Tahoe.
By implementing BMPs in Lake Tahoe, property owners can help slow the loss of lake clarity.
Tahoe Regional Planning Agency(TRPA) has an in depth look at BMPs in Lake Tahoe.
When buying a property in the Lake Tahoe, if you're not sure if a property has BMPs completed you can check the BMP Database. A good rule of thumb is that most newer construction homes will have BMPs completed and most older homes will not have them completed, but you can always check the BMP Database.
